Austin: Major League Soccer commissioner Don Garber refused to comment on potential disciplinary actions against Lionel Messi after the Inter Miami and Argentina star was absent from Wednesday's All-Star game.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Messi and his Miami teammate Jordi Alba were scheduled to start in the showcase event in Austin, representing a combined MLS XI against an All-Star team from Mexico's Liga-MX. However, news emerged on Wednesday that neither player would participate, and the reasons were not immediately disclosed.
This unexpected development has put Messi and Alba at risk of a one-game suspension from MLS. League regulations stipulate that players selected for the All-Star game must participate unless they have a legitimate reason, such as an injury. Despite this, Garber remained non-committal regarding any sanctions for Messi, who might miss Miami's upcoming match against FC Cincinnati.
"Anything that's going to happen as relates to next weekend, we're not going to talk about today," Garber informed reporters. He emphasized the ongoing nature of the situation, noting that the game against Cincinnati is still days away.
Despite Messi's recent performance, where he scored twice against the New York Red Bulls, Garber acknowledged the rigorous schedule Messi has endured. The Argentinian has played nine games in 35 days, spanning both the Club World Cup and domestic competitions.
"Miami's had a schedule that is unlike any other team," Garber pointed out, mentioning the lack of a 10-day break for Miami, unlike other teams. However, he stressed the importance of adhering to league rules while managing the situation.
Garber expressed disappointment in not being informed sooner about Messi's decision to skip the game. He indicated that earlier communication could have allowed for better handling of the circumstances.
The discussion about Messi and Alba's participation was influenced by Miami coach Javier Mascherano's earlier comments, suggesting he preferred the players to rest. Nevertheless, he acknowledged their call-up and the significance of the All-Star game.
