Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today stated that misinformation is being spread concerning his party’s reform stance. “BNP is a clean political party. A malicious group is portraying BNP as anti-reform party and it’s important to know about their motives,” he informed journalists during a press conference at the party’s Gulshan office here.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Fakhrul emphasized that there should be no doubt about the ill intentions behind this misinformation. He asserted, “Our goal is clear: we want to re-establish the democracy that Sheikh Hasina has suppressed for the past 15 years.” Fakhrul further remarked that those aiming to delay elections are not promoters of democracy.
Discussing the activities of the Consensus Commission, the BNP secretary general acknowledged the interest and expectation surrounding it, despite some feelings of frustration. He reiterated BNP’s eagerness to establish consensus, affirming that the party’s representatives are assisting the commission in making proper decisions with logical arguments.
Fakhrul pointed out that various new proposals are emerging, which would be welcomed by the people if they serve public interests. He also warned against implementing significant changes on matters of public interest without involving the populace. He restated his party’s stance on elections, highlighting that those who seek to delay elections are not a pro-democracy force and are not supporters of the July-August uprising.
The BNP secretary general urged everyone to contribute to nation-building efforts above party interests. Regarding the July Proclamation, he remarked, “We have already given our opinion on the July Proclamation. There has been no further discussion on this matter since then. However, the BNP is ready for discussion.”
