Chandpur:Agriculture, Fisheries and Livestock Minister Mohammed Aminur Rashid emphasized the crucial role of fishermen in achieving hilsa conservation goals by stopping the capture of mother hilsas.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the minister highlighted that fishermen's commitment and responsibility are essential for the success of hilsa conservation efforts. He noted that government assistance alone, such as food support, would not suffice if fishermen do not willingly cease capturing mother hilsas.
Speaking at a VGF rice distribution event in Pashim Dasadi village, the minister pointed out that the government's 22-day ban on hilsa fishing, from October 8 to 29, aims to protect the spawning period of the national fish. This ban also extends to the transportation, storage, marketing, purchase, sale, and exchange of hilsa nationwide.
During this period, 6,47,690 registered fishermen will receive 16,192.25 tonnes of rice, with each family receiving 25 kg. The minister stressed that safe spawning of mother hilsas is vital for boosting hilsa production and called on fishermen to act responsibly during the peak breeding season.
He reminded the fishermen of their significant experience in the life-cycle, reproduction, and conservation of hilsas and urged them to protect the species. Reflecting on the declining availability of hilsas in Chandpur, he underscored the need for reproductive and habitat protection.
The minister also discussed the financial challenges faced by fishermen during the ban and mentioned government plans for sustainable alternative income systems. He emphasized cooperation between the government and fishermen to safeguard both the farmers' interests and hilsa production.
The event was attended by Chandpur-3 lawmaker Sheikh Farid Ahmed, fisheries and livestock secretary M Delwar Hossen, and other local officials and fishermen.
