Dhaka: Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir made an unexpected visit to key wholesale markets in Dhaka on Tuesday evening to evaluate the supply and distribution of edible oil amidst ongoing concerns.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the minister visited Karwan Bazar and Shantinagar, engaging directly with dealers, wholesalers, retailers, and consumers to understand the current market situation. Commerce Secretary Mahbubur Rahman was also present during the inspection.

Retailers reported to the minister that there was a noticeable shortage in the supply of 5-litre bottled soybean oil, which was not meeting the demand. They also mentioned a slight rise in the price of loose soybean oil. While bottled soybean oil was available, albeit in limited quantities, the prices remained stable. Some retailers expressed dissatisfaction, claiming that certain oil company dealers were compelling them to purchase additional products alongside the oil.

During his observations, the minister found that the supply for most bottled soybean brands was nearly normal, with the introduction of a few new brands on the shelves. He assured both buyers and sellers that the supply conditions are expected to improve shortly.
