Dhaka: Bangladesh Army today reiterated its commitment to maintaining the country's law and order as well as its sovereignty, emphasizing its role in supporting the citizens. 'The army has been working relentlessly to protect the country's sovereignty and life and property of the people,' Army Headquarters (AHQ) military operations directorate staff colonel Md Shafiqul Islam said during a media briefing.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the military is actively ensuring the security of the state's important assets and establishments to stabilize the overall situation in the country. The AHQ briefing, held at Dhaka Cantonment, highlighted the army's readiness to take tougher action against mob violence and activities that could cause public suffering or damage public property in the coming days.
Colonel Islam elaborated on the directives from army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman, stating that military personnel are working in collaboration with concerned ministries, law enforcement agencies, local administrations, and mass media to uphold law and order. The Bangladesh Army is also focusing on maintaining communal harmony and ensuring the security of diplomats and foreign embassies throughout the nation.
Islam reported that 4,790 injured individuals from the July mass uprising received treatment at combined military hospitals (CMHs) in cantonments across the country, with 22 still under care at Dhaka CMH. In a continued nationwide anti-crime crackdown, the army has arrested 562 more suspected criminals and seized 26 illegal firearms and 100 rounds of bullets over the past two weeks. Since the military's deployment to maintain order, 15,646 crime suspects have been apprehended, and 9692 illegally possessed firearms along with 2,860,854 ammunitions have been confiscated.
