Meherpur: Meherpur district Awami League leader M A Khalek was arrested at the Darshana-Jaynagar checkpost in Chuadanga on Thursday. He was allegedly attempting to travel to India despite having an active case and arrest warrant against him.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Khalek, who serves as the general secretary of the district Awami League, was detained around noon when immigration police grew suspicious and cross-checked his passport and visa details. Khalek is implicated in a case filed with the Gangni Police Station on April 13, 2025, under Sections 15(3)/25D of the Special Powers Act, 1974.
Earlier, Khalek was named the prime suspect in a case concerning an alleged attack on students during the July movement in 2024. The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) apprehended him from his residence in Gangni upazila town on October 24, 2025, in relation to that case. He was subsequently granted bail by the High Court but had been in hiding ever since.
Inspector-in-Charge SI Tuhin Mia of the Darshana immigration police stated that Khalek has been handed over to the Gangni Police Station in Meherpur for further proceedings.
