Cox's bazar: Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) Secretary General and newly appointed Managing Director and Chief Editor of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) Muhammad Kader Gani Chowdhury emphasized that media freedom is at risk of diminishing unless journalists receive adequate protection. He expressed these concerns during his address as the main discussant at the annual general meeting of the Cox's Bazar Union of Journalists, held at the Cox's Bazar Press Club.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the meeting was chaired by Cox's Bazar Union of Journalists President Nurul Islam Helali, with BFUJ President Obaidur Rahman Shahin, Cox's Bazar Press Club President Mahbubur Rahman, and other journalists in attendance. Kader Gani highlighted the critical role of free and independent journalism in the nation's development and the functioning of democracy. He called for efforts to safeguard journalists' rights and foster an environment where they can thrive professionally.
Kader Gani urged journalists to unite in protecting media freedom and their professional interests. Despite some progress, he noted that challenges such as political influence, institutional pressure, and professional insecurity continue to hinder independent journalism. He also pointed out that unwarranted interference, yellow journalism, and a lack of professional competence pose significant threats to media freedom.
Emphasizing the importance of fair wages, proper working conditions, and professional dignity for journalists, Kader Gani remarked, "Journalism is not merely a job; it is an essential institution for advancing democracy, protecting citizens' rights, and exposing crime, corruption, and injustice." He underscored the constitutional protection for an independent media alongside an independent judiciary.
The BFUJ Secretary General stressed that independent journalism plays a vital role in informing authorities about national issues and providing opportunities for corrective actions. "A journalist's pen is not a weapon of destruction. It is a means of giving people a voice, revealing the truth, and standing against injustice," he stated.
Kader Gani concluded by asserting that a nation's strength is measured not only by economic development but also by justice, humanity, accountability, and the courage to speak the truth. He urged for a secure working environment for journalists, stating that it benefits not only journalists but also protects the public's right to information. Allegations against journalists, he stressed, should be handled legally and justly, avoiding attacks, intimidation, or undue pressure.
