Md. Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee: From Student Leader to Water Resources Minister

Dhaka: Md. Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee, currently serving as the Minister of Water Resources, has had a distinguished career in politics and public service. Born on February 2, 1968, in Banchanagar village under Lakshmipur municipality, Anee hails from a respected Chowdhury family. His father, Haji Bashir Ullah Chowdhury, and mother, Hosne Ara Begum, supported his early education, which began in Lakshmipur and continued in Dhaka.



According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Anee completed his SSC in Science from Lakshmipur Adarsha Samad Government High School and his HSC from the Government Science College in Tejgaon, Dhaka. He pursued higher education at the University of Dhaka, earning a B.Sc. Honors in 1988 and an M.Sc. in 1989 in Applied Chemistry and Chemical Technology. In 1993, he furthered his qualifications with a Diploma in Education from the University’s Institute of Education and Research.



Anee’s political journey commenced in his school days with the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, where he held leadership positions at the University of Dhaka, including DUCSU member and Acting VP. He later became the President of the central Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (1996-1998) and joined the BNP Central Executive Committee in 1999. His significant roles within the BNP include Joint Secretary General and Convener of Lakshmipur District BNP.



As a senior BNP leader, Anee has been elected as a Member of Parliament for Lakshmipur-3 (Sadar Upazila) three times, in 2001, 2008, and 2026. His 2026 election coincided with the BNP’s majority victory, leading to his appointment as Minister of Water Resources. During his tenure, he has participated in several standing committees, covering Education, Disaster Management and Relief, Textiles and Jute, and Science and Information Technology. In 2013, he also served as Acting Chief Whip of the Opposition in the National Parliament.



Anee’s commitment to public service continues as he manages the responsibilities of the Water Resources Ministry. He is married to Parveen Akter Chowdhury and is the father of two sons and one daughter.
