Dhaka: Police have arrested the alleged mastermind and one of the main accused in the high-profile Kakon murder case in Purbadhala upazila of Netrokona district. The suspect, Abdur Rashid, 33, was apprehended from the Bashundhara Residential Area in the capital, Dhaka, following a two-day operation.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Purbadhala Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Abdullah Al Mamun confirmed the arrest late Sunday night. He mentioned that the accused had already been produced before the court with a prayer for a seven-day police remand.
The arrest operation, which took place around 7:00 pm on August 1, was conducted at Road No-22 in Block K of the Bashundhara Residential Area under the overall supervision of Netrokona Superintendent of Police Md. Tarikul Islam. The operation was led by Purbadhala Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Mohammad Habibur Rahman and included Second Officer Md. Rafiqul Islam, Assistant Sub-Inspector Anwar Hossain, Constable Nahid Hasan Khan, and Unarmed ASI Md. Abul Hossain.
Abdur Rashid, the son of Hasen Ali from Dapunia Sehra Duari village in Purbadhala upazila, is accused of orchestrating the attack on Kakon Mia. According to the case statement, Kakon Mia was ambushed by Abdur Rashid, his brother Abdur Rahim, and several relatives on August 6, 2025, as he was returning home from Dapunia Bazar. The attackers allegedly used sharp weapons, including Chinese axes, machetes, and cleavers, resulting in fatal injuries.
Following the incident, the victim's brother-in-law, Masud Al Mamun, filed a murder case with Purbadhala Police Station, naming 10 accused, including Abdur Rashid, along with four or five unidentified individuals. Police reported that all other named accused had already been apprehended, while Abdur Rashid managed to remain in hiding since the murder. To evade arrest, he is believed to have moved between Sylhet, Chattogram, Khagrachhari, Cumilla, and Dhaka, frequently changing his mobile SIM cards and handsets to avoid detection.
