Manikganj: People from all walks of life in the district today observed the “Martyred Intellectuals’ Day,” paying rich tributes to the intellectuals who were brutally killed by the Pakistani occupation forces and their local collaborators at the fag-end of the country’s Liberation War in 1971. Manikganj District Administration observed the day with special programmes.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the programme of the day commenced with the placement of a floral wreath on the “Shahid Smriti Stambho” at the Government High School Playground in the morning. Marking the day, Manikganj District Administration also arranged a discussion at the conference room of the Deputy Commissioner.

The Deputy Commissioner (DC) Nazmun Ara Sultana presided over the function. Government and nongovernment officials of the district, Freedom Fighters, local elite, and journalists attended the function. The event was addressed by several prominent figures, including the Chief Executive Officer of Manikganj District Council Mehedi Hasan, Executive Engineer of Water Development Board Akheruzzaman, Executive Engineer of Power Grid Dewan Giash Mahmud, Convenor Manikganj District Freedom Fighters Command Council Md Abdul Mannan, and Journalist Monirul Islam Mihir.

The speakers recalled with respect the supreme sacrifice of the Freedom Fighters during the liberation war. They stated that the Pakistani occupation and their associates killed the intellectuals of the country with a view to making the nation devoid of intellect.

The day’s programme included special prayers for the departed souls of the martyred Freedom Fighters and martyrs of the July uprising of 2024 at the mosques. Additionally, different socio-cultural and political organisations and educational institutions organised seminars and discussions to highlight the significance of the day.
