Gournadi: Prime Minister’s Political Adviser Zahir Uddin Swapon emphasized the sacrifices of numerous leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in their quest to establish democracy. He made these remarks while attending a discussion organized by the Gournadi upazila unit of BNP, commemorating the party’s founding anniversary.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Swapon highlighted the challenges faced by the nation post-independence, noting that the then ruling authorities had undermined democratic rights, leading to dissent within the Awami League. He recalled the significant political change on August 15, marked by the abolition of BAKSAL, which paved the way for BNP’s emergence.
Swapon acknowledged the pivotal role played by BNP founder Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman in stabilizing the armed forces, ensuring food security, enhancing Bangladesh’s international reputation, and initiating the country’s garment industry. He praised BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia for her leadership in the anti-autocracy movement against the Ershad regime.
He reiterated the sacrifices made by BNP leaders and activists, including Abu Sayeed and Chhatra Dal activist Wasim, during the 2024 July mass uprising. Swapon remarked on the ongoing struggle for voting rights, acknowledging that 221 people remain missing due to their involvement in the democracy movement.
Swapon also commented on the political landscape, suggesting that fascist rulers faced social isolation and predicted legal consequences for Sheikh Hasina upon her return to the country.
The discussion was chaired by Gournadi upazila BNP Convener and Valiant Freedom Fighter Syed Sarwar Alam Biplob, with Barishal North District BNP Member Secretary Md Mizanur Rahman Mukul as the chief speaker. Several other BNP leaders and members participated in the event.
Earlier in the day, Swapon attended meetings with the Agailjhara and Gournadi upazila administrations and joined BNP programs commemorating the party’s founding anniversary.
