Khulna: Khulna City Corporation’s Nazrul Islam Manju today emphasized the importance of coordinated efforts between government and non-government organizations to address the impacts of climate change. “We have to understand the problems faced by climate-affected people and work collectively based on their opinions to resolve those problems,” he stated at a stakeholders’ workshop in the city. The event aimed to support the development of a national strategy on climate change-related loss and damage and to enhance climate resilience in Bangladesh.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the workshop titled ‘Multi-Actor Partnership on Climate Change Related Loss and Damage, Supporting the Establishment of the National Mechanism on Loss and Damage in Bangladesh’ was organized by the NGO Adams Foundation at Hotel City Inn in Khulna. The event featured notable speakers including Prof Dr Md Mujibur Rahman from Khulna University, Dr Md Shahjahan Ali from Khulna University of Engineering and Technology, climate change expert Dr Fazle Rabbi Sadik Ahmed, Director of the Department of Environment Khondkar Md Fazlul Haque, and KDA member Ruhul Amin Kutubuddin Ahmed.
Project coordinators Zillur Rahman and Nur-E-Ilahi presented the concept paper on the project activities and the multi-actor partnership. Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Bitan Kumar Mondal chaired the workshop, while Mahbubur Rahman delivered the keynote address. Ashik Mahmud, Deputy Executive Director of Adams Foundation, welcomed participants to the workshop.
The project is being implemented locally by Adams Foundation, nationally by ICCAD, and internationally by Germanwatch. Organizers stated that the workshop’s objective was to assist relevant government agencies in formulating a national loss and damage strategy. This would be based on the opinions of local government and non-government stakeholders, civil society representatives, academic institutions, and the needs of climate migrants.
Officials from various government and private organizations, ward-level CCD committee representatives, and journalists participated in the workshop.
