Tangail: A tribunal in Tangail has sentenced Rashid Mia, 55, to life imprisonment for violating a teenage girl in 2024. The verdict was delivered by Tangail Women and Children Repression Tribunal Judge Md Abdul Majid.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Rashid Mia, a resident of Agsawali village in Mirzapur upazila, was also fined Tk 2 lakh. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional two years of rigorous imprisonment. The court further declared Rashid Mia the biological father of the child born from the crime and recognized the child as his legal heir. The state has been ordered to cover the child's maintenance costs until the child reaches 21 years of age. Should the child remain unmarried after turning 21, the state will continue to provide maintenance until marriage.
The prosecution detailed that Rashid Mia, a neighbor to the 14-year-old victim, lured her into his room on April 14, 2024, where he assaulted her after restraining her with a gamcha (towel). He warned her against disclosing the incident, threatening severe consequences. The victim gave birth to a daughter on December 22, 2024. She filed a case with the Tangail Women and Children Repression Tribunal on February 5, 2025. Following the court's directive, Mirzapur Police registered the complaint as a First Information Report. Subsequently, on April 30, 2025, the police submitted a chargesheet against Rashid Mia.
