Narayanganj: A court in Narayanganj has sentenced a man to death for the murder of a schoolboy that took place in 2020. Narayanganj District and Sessions Judge Abu Shamim delivered the judgment, convicting Ripon, who was tried in absentia, and imposing a fine of Tk 2 lakh on him.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the prosecution detailed how Ripon lured Arafat, the son of Rafiqul Islam from Madanpur in Bandar upazila, to a Victory Day concert on December 15, 2020. Later that evening, Ripon took Arafat to an abandoned school building, where he strangled him to death following a dispute with Arafat’s brother and disposed of the body in a pond.

The lifeless body of Arafat was discovered by locals floating in the pond on December 18, 2020. They promptly informed the police, who then recovered the body. A case was subsequently filed with Bandar Police Station the following day. Police investigations led to Ripon’s arrest, during which he confessed to the crime in court under Section 164.

A chargesheet was filed against two individuals, including Ripon. However, Ripon later obtained bail and has since been in hiding. After reviewing the evidence and hearing witness testimonies, the court acquitted the other accused, Rabbi, due to insufficient evidence against him.
