Dhaka: A court here has placed alleged fraud ring member Ripon Mia on a three-day remand for impersonating a Sub-Inspector (SI) of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID)’s cyber unit to cheat victims. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ismail passed the order last evening after police produced the accused before the court seeking a seven-day remand, SI Tarek ul Islam, an official of the General Registration Branch for the Khilkhet Police Station at the court, confirmed to BSS.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Ripon Mia, 24, was arrested by the CID’s Cyber Police Center (CPC) unit from a residence at Falguni Housing Area under Ashulia Police Station in Dhaka district late Wednesday night. Four mobile phones and eight SIM cards used in committing the fraud were seized during the drive.

Case documents reveal that a victim lost his iPhone-15 mobile phone near Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) area in the capital on January 7. Later, the victim contacted a fake Facebook account and was given a WhatsApp number while attempting to recover the phone. Upon contacting the number, the fraudster introduced himself as “SI Iqbal Hossain” of the CID cyber unit and promised to recover the phone.

The accused later collected Taka 5,000 from the victim through bKash as a recovery fee and subsequently cut off all communication. The victim then filed a case with Khilkhet Police Station. Using the same method, the fraud ring also allegedly swindled another victim out of Taka 72,700, sources added.
