Malibongwe Maketa Appointed as Assistant Coach of Bangladesh National Cricket Team

Dhaka:The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has announced the appointment of Malibongwe Maketa as the assistant coach of the Bangladesh national men's cricket team. His tenure will extend until November 2028, and he will be joining the national coaching setup in the UAE.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Maketa, a 46-year-old South African, brings extensive experience from his roles across domestic, international, and high-performance cricket in South Africa. The BCB highlighted his qualifications as a Cricket South Africa (CSA) Level 4 coach and his over two decades of coaching experience.

Maketa's previous roles have included Assistant Coach of the South Africa Men's National Team, Head Coach of South Africa A, South Africa U19, National Academy, and the Warriors Franchise. During his tenure as Assistant Coach of the South African national team from 2017 to 2019, he played a significant role in preparing the Proteas for international competitions and was part of the coaching staff at the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup in England.

He has also contributed to several successful series, including Test victories against Australia and India, and series wins against Sri Lanka and Pakistan. His work with the South African National Academy focused on preparing players for international cricket, and he has coached across all formats at both franchise and provincial levels.

Maketa expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, stating, "I am pleased to accept the position of Assistant Coach with the Bangladesh National Team. I am truly grateful for the trust and confidence placed in me by the Bangladesh Cricket Board, and I look forward to contributing positively to the team's success."

He also emphasized his enthusiasm about working with the young and exciting team alongside Phil and the rest of the coaching staff, aiming to support the players' development and contribute to the team's achievements.

Most recently, Maketa served as Head Coach of the South Africa U19 team and the National Academy, leading South Africa Emerging to the CSA One-Day Cup Division 2 title in 2023-24 and guiding South Africa U19 to the ICC U19 World Cup semi-finals.
