Cumilla: The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has apprehended the main suspect in the murder case of housewife Sumi Akhter Putul, aged 25, from the Laksam Police Station area in Cumilla, after evading capture for four years. The murder occurred in Fakirhat Upazila, Bagerhat district.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the suspect, identified as Bijoy alias Rinku Hossain, 38, is the son of Akhter Hossain alias Kamal Mia Munshi from Ghatura village in Brahmanbaria district. The CID's Bagerhat District Unit conducted the arrest around 5 pm on Monday following an extensive investigation.
The murder took place on October 15, 2020, when Sumi Akhter's body was discovered next to her home in Satbaria village. In response, her family filed a murder case at Fakirhat Police Station under sections 302 and 34 of the Penal Code. The case was subsequently transferred to the CID by Police Headquarters for further investigation.
The CID's findings revealed that Bijoy had been involved in a long-term extramarital affair with Sumi Akhter. On the night of the murder, an argument ensued when Sumi pressured Bijoy to marry her. The confrontation escalated, leading Bijoy to strangle Sumi with a veil and push her to her death. He then concealed her body with coconut branches before fleeing.
During initial interrogation, Bijoy confessed to the crime, stating that he acted out of fear of his affair being exposed and to escape the pressure of marriage. He has since provided a confessional statement under Section 164 of the CrPC before the court.
