Main Accused in Jashore Businessman Murder Case Arrested

Jashore: Police have arrested the main accused in the murder case of businessman Anisur Rahman in Abhaynagar upazila of the district. The accused, Shah Mahmud, 38, was apprehended during a late-night raid on Sunday at a house in the RN Road area of the district town, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Operations) Mirajul Islam stated at a press briefing today.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Shah Mahmud had been hiding in the house and was preparing to flee to India. The operation was conducted by a joint team comprising members from the Abhaynagar Police Station, district Detective Branch (DB), and Cyber Crime Unit. Investigators revealed that the motive behind the murder was a long-standing dispute over the rent of a shop owned by the victim.

The incident took place on May 6 near the Guakhola Pirbari Mosque area under Abhaynagar Police Station. Shah Mahmud, along with several associates, allegedly attacked Anisur Rahman during an altercation. The critically injured Anisur was first taken to Abhaynagar Upazila Health Complex and later transferred to Khulna Medical College Hospital. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries on the way to Dhaka Medical College Hospital at around 2:00 am on May 7.

Following the tragic event, the victim’s wife, Nahida Imam, filed a murder case with Abhaynagar Police Station. Police had previously arrested another suspect, Monir Hossain, in connection with the case. During the initial interrogation, Shah Mahmud reportedly confessed to his role in the murder and admitted his plan to escape to India.
