DHAKA: Mahidul Islam Ankon, the emerging wicket-keeper batter of Khulna Tigers, has captured widespread attention in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) with his remarkable execution of the helicopter shot. Ankon delivered a striking performance against the Chittagong Kings, scoring a rapid 59 runs off 22 balls, including one four and six sixes. His feat included a half-century reached in just 18 balls, marking a joint-fastest fifty by a Bangladeshi player in T20 history. The standout moment came when Ankon hit three sixes using the helicopter shot during the power play, guiding his team to a 37-run victory.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Ankon’s mastery of the helicopter shot has not only contributed to his team’s success but has also demonstrated the potential of Bangladeshi cricketers to innovate in the sport. Historically popularized by India’s former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the helicopter shot is known for its effectiveness against yorkers and slower full-toss deliveries, commonly used by bowlers in the T20 format. Ankon’s precision in executing this challenging shot has set him apart, as no Bangladeshi batter had previously dared to attempt it at such a high level due to its inherent risks.

Ankon credits his success to dedicated practice sessions aimed at mastering the art of the helicopter shot. “I mean practice. I personally practiced to hone the art of it as I wanted to score against the yorkers and full-toss deliveries,” Ankon expressed following a training session. His strategic anticipation and timing have been crucial in his ability to play this shot effectively, dismissing earlier excuses made by Bangladeshi players regarding their inability to consistently hit sixes.

Ankon’s approach emphasizes the importance of skill, timing, and power, proving that with rigorous practice, local cricketers can achieve significant feats. He has embraced his role within the Khulna Tigers, focusing on delivering impactful performances and finishing games with aggressive innings. Ankon stated, “This time, my role is also different but I know from the very beginning that what my role will be. The management and captain of Khulna Tigers have inspired me and said they will back me. I want to play fearless cricket.”

His emergence as a key player in the BPL underscores the potential for innovation and skill development within Bangladeshi cricket, challenging traditional perceptions and inspiring a new generation of athletes.
