Dhaka: Some low-lying areas in Chapainawabganj district have been inundated as water levels in the Padma, Mahananda, and Punarbhaba rivers continued to rise due to an onrush of water from upstream, leaving around 4,350 families waterlogged.
According to United News of Bangladesh, over the past 24 hours until Saturday morning, the water level of the Padma rose by 3 centimeters, while the Mahananda and Punarbhaba experienced a rise of 7 centimeters each. Despite the increases, the water levels of all three rivers remain below their respective danger marks, as reported by the Water Development Board.
As of Saturday morning, the Padma was flowing 26 centimeters below the danger level, while the Mahananda and Punarbhaba were flowing 1.05 meters and 2.02 meters below their respective danger marks. The continued rise in the Padma has led to the inundation of new areas in the low-lying regions of Narayanpur and Alatuli unions of Sadar upazila, as well as Panka, Durlabhpur, and Ujirpur unions of Shibganj upazila.
Water has entered roads, homes, shops, and educational institutions in some areas, submerging croplands and causing hardship to people living in the affected regions. Deputy Commissioner Abu Saleh Md Musa Jangi stated that around 4,350 families have become stranded, and relief assistance is being provided to those affected.
Water Development Board Executive Engineer Ahsan Habib mentioned that the rate of increase in river water levels has started to slow. He noted that there is no immediate risk of flooding and expects the water levels to begin receding after the next two days.
