Dhaka: Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin announced on Monday that the forthcoming local government elections will uphold the same standards as the national election conducted on February 12, 2026. He assured that there would be no compromise on the quality of the elections and expressed the commission's commitment to potentially surpassing previous standards.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the CEC made these remarks while addressing reporters after participating in a dialogue titled 'Strategic Leadership for Bangladesh Local Government Election'. The event was organised by the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) and took place at the Election Training Institute (ETI) building in Agargaon. The gathering saw attendance from other election commissioners, the EC secretary, and senior officials of the commission.
Nasir Uddin conveyed confidence in the commission's ability to successfully conduct the local elections with the cooperation of all involved parties. When questioned about the timing of the elections, he stated that dates would be established following consultations with the government. He noted that while the announcement of the election date is pending, the commission is actively preparing and making necessary amendments to laws, rules, and regulations.
Highlighting the challenges of local government elections, which historically experience more violent incidents than national elections, the CEC emphasized the role of law enforcement agencies in maintaining order. "There is somewhat more violence in these elections. We will make every possible effort. In particular, the responsibilities of different forces and law enforcement agencies will be greater," he remarked.
Regarding the by-election for the Thakurgaon-1 constituency, the CEC mentioned that it must be conducted within 90 days and confirmed that preparations are underway.
