Dhaka: Local Government Minister and BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced that local government elections will be conducted at the appropriate time, despite the appointment of administrators in six city corporations. "There are government rules and procedures for local government elections. Some bodies have fixed terms, and some terms have already expired. We will consider everything and ensure the elections are held at the proper time," he stated.
According to United News of Bangladesh, while speaking to reporters at the BNP's Nayapaltan central office, Fakhrul assured that the government will prioritize the local body polls. When questioned about whether the appointment of administrators might delay the elections, he responded with a definitive "No."
This marked Fakhrul's first visit to the party office since assuming his role as Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Minister. During his visit, he connected with party leaders, activists, supporters, and office staff before addressing the media.
On the topic of qualifications for party nominees to reserved women's seats in Parliament, Fakhrul indicated that Parliament would make the final decision. Candidates must adhere to the party's ideals and demonstrate dedication, with priority given to those actively involved over time.
Addressing reports about the reopening of Awami League offices in some regions, Fakhrul expressed his opposition, noting that since their activities are legally banned, the issue will be handled accordingly.
In his address at Nayapaltan, Fakhrul paid homage to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, recalling her leadership in key democratic movements and her contributions to Bangladesh's political history.
Fakhrul also highlighted the BNP's ongoing efforts to build a new Bangladesh under the leadership of BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, noting his swift rise in public stature and dedication to national progress.
Expressing optimism, Fakhrul conveyed his hope that the BNP will grow stronger under Rahman's leadership, guiding Bangladesh to prosperity as envisioned by the party's founder, Ziaur Rahman. He called for continued public support and cooperation for the BNP's vision for the nation.
