Baunia: Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives and Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan today announced a plan to revitalize the city’s canals through collective efforts. He emphasized the need for excavation, restoration, and pollution control to achieve this goal.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the initiative was revealed at the inauguration of a renovation program for six canals included in the blue network project aimed at liberating Dhaka’s canals from encroachment and pollution. The program was launched at Baunia, highlighting the interim government’s commitment to urban reform. Asif Mahmud mentioned that the ‘Dhaka North Model Plan’ has been developed to address urban challenges, positioning it as a future role model for city management under the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC).
The adviser attributed the uninhabitable conditions of Dhaka city to prolonged unplanned urbanization. He outlined a development initiative focused on the restoration and effective management of all water bodies and canals. As part of the blue network framework, efforts are underway to rejuvenate 19 canals. The adviser urged the participation and cooperation of all city residents in this canal renovation initiative.
The canal renovation program was inaugurated by Environment, Forest, Climate Change, and Water Resources Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan. Housing and Public Works and Industries Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan encouraged citizens to ensure proper waste and drainage management. The event concluded with remarks from Secretary of the Local Government Division M Nizam Uddin, in the presence of high-ranking officials from various ministries.
