Dhaka: National Consensus Commission Vice-Chairman Professor Dr. Ali Riaz emphasized the critical importance of the Liberation War and the 2024 mass uprising to the nation's existence, asserting that the journey forward must be guided by these pivotal events. He stated that ignoring these events, marked by bloodshed and significant loss of life, is not an option.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Ali Riaz highlighted these points during his opening speech on the 16th day of discussions with political parties at the Foreign Service Academy. He stressed that the Liberation War of Bangladesh is deeply intertwined with the nation's identity, surpassing all successes and failures and achieved through a prolonged struggle involving the sacrifices of millions.
He further elaborated that the nation had faced severe challenges, including a period of oppressive governance, but managed to reach its current state through collective struggle. This historical context forms the basis of the National Charter, which he urged political parties to quickly finalize, keeping in mind the significance of these events.
Ali Riaz called for a consensus by July 31, considering it an imperative deadline. He noted that while some issues may require extended discussion, others demand immediate resolution. The 'note of dissent' system allows for disagreement to be formally recorded in the national charter.
He also addressed the ongoing discussions about the formation of a bicameral parliament, indicating that the commission would consider the parties' opinions and provide feedback soon. He noted that most parties favor the revised proposal regarding the caretaker government, though disagreements remain on certain points.
The meeting saw participation from commission members, including Safar Raj Hossain, Justice Emdadul Haque, Dr. Badiul Alam Majumder, Dr. Iftekharuzzaman, Dr. Ayub Mia, and Chief Adviser's Special Assistant Manir Haidar. Representatives from 30 political parties, such as the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, and others, joined the discussions aimed at reaching a swift consensus.
