Dhaka: Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan has expressed the expectation of working in an integrated way with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to make the country's local government institutions more capable and effective.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the minister shared this expectation during a courtesy meeting with UNDP Resident Representative in Bangladesh Stefan Rodriguez at his office at the Secretariat. State Minister for Local Government Mir Shahe Alam was also present. The meeting focused on various aspects of developing and enhancing the capacity of the local government system, particularly in light of the upcoming local government elections. Discussions included the organization of joint training programs for personnel ahead of the elections, and the role of UNDP's cooperation in various development projects as well as the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan emphasized the urgency of increasing the capacity of local government institutions to deliver government services effectively to citizens. He noted that UNDP's technical expertise could be instrumental in developing skills and enhancing institutional capacity at the local level. He highlighted that an effective local government system is crucial for the country's overall development and for achieving the SDGs. Thus, he called for more effective initiatives through mutual cooperation with development partners.
State Minister Mir Shahe Alam remarked on the importance of training programs to enhance the preparation and skills of those involved in the local government elections. He stated that joint programs with UNDP could positively impact the capacity-building efforts of the local government system.
The meeting was attended by Secretary of the Local Government Division Md. Shahidul Hasan, UNDP Assistant Resident Representatives Sardar Asaduzzaman and Anwarul Haque, International Project Manager and Technical Advisor Yugesh Pradhanang, along with senior officials of the ministry.
