Dhaka: Shipping and Labour and Employment Adviser Brigadier General (Retd) Dr M Sakhawat Hussain today said legal action will be taken against the owners of Nassa Group if workers’ wages are not paid.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Adviser made this announcement during a meeting of the Advisory Council Committee on labour and business conditions in Beximco Industrial Park-based industries, held at the Labour and Employment Ministry conference room. The meeting directed the delegation of Nassa Group to obtain a power of attorney from company owner Nazrul Islam Mazumder by September 21. This would enable the sale of his properties to ensure the payment of workers’ salaries and allowances for the current month.

The owners of Nassa Group were also instructed to inform the government within the same timeframe whether the company will continue operations or face closure. Failure to comply with these directives would result in legal measures against the owners. Additionally, the Adviser warned that the passports of the owner, his wife, son, and daughter would be cancelled if the directives were ignored.

The meeting included a detailed discussion on Nassa Group, highlighting that the owner and his family possess significant assets. These include two 12-storey buildings at Gulshan-1, land in the 300-feet area, markets in Jalsiri, multiple plots, warehouses, and petrol pumps in Meghna Ghat, 300 bighas of land in Thakurgaon, and properties in Niketan, DOHS Mohakhali, Purbachal, and Uttara. Their international assets include a date orchard and resort in Dubai.

Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed, Home Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Commerce Adviser Sk Bashir Uddin, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Abdul Hafiz, secretaries from various ministries, chiefs of law enforcement agencies, the president of BGMEA, and representatives from Bangladesh Bank and Shahjalal Islami Bank were also present at the meeting.
