Dhaka: The Adviser to the Ministry of Agriculture, Lt. Gen. Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (Rtd.), announced today that a new law aimed at protecting the country’s agricultural land from illegal occupancy will soon be enacted. He emphasized the urgency of the situation, noting the gradual decrease in the size of agricultural land due to illegal occupation.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the announcement came during Lt. Gen. Chowdhury’s visit to the Bangladesh Institute of Research and Training on Applied Nutrition (BIRTAN) in the Bishnandi area of Araihazar. He informed the media that the government has instructed district administrations to dismantle unauthorized billboards that have been erected on agricultural land under the guise of housing projects.

Highlighting the success of this year’s agricultural production, he stated that rice production has surpassed national demand by 1.5 million tonnes, eliminating the need for rice imports. This achievement underscores the importance of preserving agricultural land to sustain future production levels.

During his visit to BIRTAN, the adviser also participated in a tree-planting ceremony on the institute’s premises. He was accompanied by BIRTAN Director Rehena Akter, Narayanganj Deputy Commissioner Jahidul Islam Mia, and District Superintendent of Police Pratyush Kumar Majumdar.

Earlier in the day, Lt. Gen. Chowdhury, who also holds the position of in-charge of the Ministry of Home Affairs, visited the temporary office building of the Araihazar police station. There, he inquired about the district’s overall law and order situation, demonstrating the government’s commitment to maintaining peace and security alongside agricultural development.
