Dhaka: Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Monday announced that the country's law-and-order situation has witnessed visible improvement over the past six months, though further time is required to consolidate this progress. 'The people of the country will assess whether they are satisfied with the law-and-order situation. However, from the government's perspective, we can certainly say there has been a visible improvement in the law-and-order situation over the last six months,' he stated.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the minister made these remarks while briefing journalists following a meeting of the committee formed to make recommendations on the report of the Bangladesh Judicial Service Pay Commission, 2025, at the Ministry of Finance in the Secretariat. Salahuddin highlighted that during the past six months, numerous reform initiatives have been carried out, leading to commendable actions by law enforcement agencies.
He further elaborated that various government initiatives and programs undertaken during the first 180 days in office have received appreciation from the public. The minister acknowledged the series of global and domestic crises faced by the government since assuming office and emphasized their effective management.
Addressing the global energy and gas crisis resulting from the Russia-Ukraine war and the Middle East conflict, Salahuddin noted that the government has refrained from immediately raising fuel prices in Bangladesh, despite the global impact. He pointed out that fuel prices have nearly doubled in the global market and in neighboring countries during this period.
Referring to the inherited gas and energy crisis from the previous government, Salahuddin stated that resolving the issue is not an overnight task. The current government is focusing on sustainable and long-term plans to overcome the crisis, emphasizing the necessity of adequate primary energy supplies to attract global investment, expand trade and business, and maintain industrial production.
A decision has been made to establish a full-scale onshore LNG terminal at Matarbari in Cox's Bazar, Salahuddin revealed. Additionally, initiatives to establish multiple floating storage regasification units (FSRUs) aim to address disruptions in gas supplies caused by frequent mechanical issues at existing terminals operated by Summit Group and Excelerate Energy. New onshore and offshore gas exploration activities have also commenced to reduce reliance on imports, with hopes for a sustainable resolution to the energy crisis in the coming years.
