Dhaka:Lakshmi Puja, a significant religious festival for the Hindu community, is being observed today with religious fervor and enthusiasm. This festival occurs on the first full-moon night following Durga Puja, the largest Hindu festival, and is also known as Kojagari Lakshmi Puja. The term "Kojagara" is derived from "Ko Jagarti" ("Who is awake?"), reflecting the belief that Goddess Lakshmi roams the earth at night to bless those who remain awake in devotion.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, this full-moon night, also known as Kojagiri Purnima, coincides with the celebration of Prabarana Purnima, the second-largest religious festival for the Buddhist community. During this time, Buddhists conclude their three-month seclusion for self-edification and atonement. The festival includes the release of candle-lit air balloons made of colored paper, a chief attraction of the celebration.

Hindus believe that on the night of Purnima, Goddess Lakshmi visits to bestow prosperity, prompting Bengali Hindus to perform Lakshmi Puja in their homes. Essential items for the Puja include a consecrated pot, rice, mango leaves, flowers, and other offerings. The day is marked by staying awake throughout the night, fasting, and drawing traditional alpona patterns depicting Lakshmi's footprints.

For Buddhists, Prabarana Purnima marks the end of a period of introspection and includes a month-long preaching of sermons. The day's programs begin with flag hoisting and chanting from the sacred Tripitaka. Activities such as breaking monks' fasts, mass prayers, and blood donations highlight the day. Celebrations take place in monasteries and educational institutions, with special prayers for peace and prosperity.

In Dhaka, major religious congregations occur at locations such as Dharmarajik Bouddha Bihar and the International Buddhist Monastery. In Chattogram, events are held at various temples, including the Nandankanan Buddhist Temple. Law enforcement agencies have been deployed to ensure a smooth celebration of these festivals.
