Khulna: Vice-Chancellor of Khulna University (KU), Professor Dr Md Rezaul Karim, today urged media professionals to uphold objective journalism and ensure proper fact-checking in their works. He made the remarks as the chief guest while unveiling Protichchhobi, the annual magazine of the Khulna University Journalists' Association, during the official handover ceremony of its new executive committee, held at the Journalist Liaquat Ali Auditorium on the campus.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Professor Karim emphasized the importance of responsible journalism, particularly for students who are balancing their academic pursuits with their roles as budding journalists. He highlighted how students, through their writing, are bringing attention to the university's achievements in education and research, as well as various challenges. Professor Karim also praised the student journalists' role in the July Uprising, noting their esteemed place within the community for maintaining objectivity in their reporting.
Professor Karim acknowledged the simplification of the journalism process due to technological advancements but warned against the potential for irresponsibility. He congratulated the newly elected members of the KU Journalists' Association, urging them to focus on presenting objective news and verifying facts to protect the university's reputation.
Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Harun-or-Rashid Khan, speaking as a special guest, stressed the global respect for the journalism profession. He pointed out that truth-seeking, responsibility, and creativity are essential qualities for journalists. Professor Khan warned of the damaging effects a single false report can have on an individual's life, urging journalists to remain committed to the truth.
The event commenced with a welcome speech by outgoing President Ekramul Haque, who presented a PowerPoint highlighting the association's journey, achievements, and future plans. Newly elected President Alzama Romin expressed his dedication to contributing actively to the organization's development.
