Khulna: Khulna University (KU) syndicate today cancelled academic enrollment of five students and certificate of a graduate on charge of assaulting a teacher. The syndicate also decided to prohibit a student from entering the campus and filing police case against him on the allegation.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the decision was taken in a meeting of the syndicate with Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Rezaul Karim in the chair. Briefing reporters after the syndicate meeting, Prof. Rezaul Karim stated that the KU registrar will file the case against Mobarak Hossain Noman, an 18th batch student of the Bangla department, with the Horintana police.
He further mentioned that the syndicate has formed a three-member committee, led by Professor Dr Emdadul Haque, to investigate the incident of assaulting a teacher. The other members of the committee are Professor Dr Md Khasrul Alam and Professor Dr Md Azmol Huda. The committee has been instructed to submit their report as soon as possible.
According to a syndicate member, the incident occurred when Mobarak Hossain Noman allegedly struck Prof Hasan Mahmud Sakir, the assistant director of student affairs, on the head with a metal object. The altercation took place on Friday night after Prof Sakir requested Noman and his accomplices not to steal mangoes from a tree on the campus.
In the aftermath, the students fled the scene, leaving Prof Sakir unconscious on the ground. He was subsequently admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH) for treatment. Following the incident, students from various dormitories organized a procession and staged a demonstration in front of the Vice-Chancellor’s residence, demanding severe punishment for the perpetrators and their permanent exclusion from the campus.
