Khulna: A total of 54,369 tonnes of mustard yield is anticipated to be harvested from approximately 38,251 hectares of land across the four districts within the Khulna division during the ongoing Rabi season.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) has set this ambitious target, facilitated by favourable climate conditions and various government initiatives, which have bolstered growth and predict a bumper crop production.
Md Rafiqul Islam, the additional director of the DAE, noted significant participation from landless and marginal farmers who have transformed saline-prone lands in the Coastal belt into productive mustard fields. They have benefited from suitable climate conditions, high-yielding varieties, and modern agricultural technologies, leading to expectations of exceeding both acreage and yield targets this season. Collaboration with the Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute (BARI) and various NGOs has also played a crucial role in achieving these goals.
Farmers like Moshiur Rahman from Mechoghona village have embraced oilseed cultivation due to its easy process and lower production costs compared to other Rabi crops. Similarly, Shaheed Hossain from Golna village and Hasibur Rahman from Nandigram have expanded their mustard cultivation, driven by successful yields in previous seasons. Dumuria Upazila Agriculture Officer Insane Ibne Amin emphasized the government's priority in supporting agriculture, with field-level officials actively providing services to farmers.
Mustard seed cultivation has become increasingly popular as it is a water-saving crop, reducing pressure on underground water sources, especially in coastal areas. Farmers like Durga Mondal from Katianagla village have noted the economic benefits, with cultivation costs being low and profits promising. Besides, the integration of beehives beside mustard fields is enhancing pollination and offering an additional income stream through honey production.
With the support of the DAE and other agricultural bodies, farmers are optimistic about achieving higher yields this year. Md Rafiqul Islam confirmed the department's commitment to advising farmers on best practices to maximize their harvests.
