Dhaka: Attorney General (AG) Md Asaduzzaman today asserted that the July National Charter represents a more transparent, structured, and specific political settlement than any previous ones. He made these remarks during an event titled “Implementation of the July Charter for the Protection of Democracy” held at the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC) in the capital.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the event was organized by Debate for Democracy, with its Chairman Hasan Ahmed Chowdhury Kiron presiding. The Attorney General emphasized the significance of the July National Charter, stating, “This July National Charter will remain a memorable chapter in the arena of law.” He warned that failing to implement the charter would lead future generations to remember the current leadership as timid cowards. Despite acknowledging challenges, he expressed confidence that they can be overcome.

The AG highlighted the potential consequences of deviating from the charter by adopting the narrative of the defeated forces of the July movement, cautioning that such actions could hinder the nation’s progress. He criticized past autocratic governments for distorting the Constitution of ’72, undermining the rule of law, and depriving people of their voting rights.

Md Asaduzzaman expressed hope that the realization of the July uprising’s dreams would restore people’s voting rights and allow the trial of the July killings to proceed without obstruction. He noted that processes are underway to address enforced disappearances and killings by past regimes, with ongoing arguments and an awaited verdict. “The pledge of the July spirit is the very foundation of these trials,” he added.

Debate for Democracy Chairman Hasan Ahmed Chowdhury Kiron described the July Charter as a historic document crucial to Bangladesh’s future. He stressed the importance of its successful implementation to prevent the resurgence of fascist forces.

The event also featured a debate competition where debaters from Presidency University triumphed over their counterparts from Bangladesh Maritime University. The judging panel included Professor Abu Muhammad Rais, Dr. Tajul Islam Chowdhury Tuhin, and journalists Hasan Zaved, Moniruzzaman Mishon, and Maidur Rahman Rubel. Participants were awarded trophies, crests, and certificates following the competition.
