Dhaka: The Jahangirnagar University Journalists’ Association (JUJA) today hosted its charge handover and farewell ceremony for 2026 at the Senate Hall of Jahangirnagar University. Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon attended the programme as the chief guest, emphasizing the role of journalism in serving the people and upholding the truth. He remarked that an independent media is essential for ensuring transparency and accountability in society.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the minister highlighted the importance of a free and responsible media in maintaining accountability within a democratic system. He encouraged young journalists to remain steadfast in their commitment to professional ethics and values.
The event also featured JU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan as the guest of honour. He urged journalists to work towards bringing solace to those in distress and to create accountability for those who unjustly enjoy privileges. He stressed the significance of constructive criticism and advised journalists to differentiate it from defamation.
Special guests at the event included Pro-VC (Academic) Professor Dr. M Mahfuzur Rahman, Pro-VC (Administration) Professor Dr. Sohel Ahmed, and Treasurer Professor Dr. M Abdur Rab. Outgoing JUJA President Mehedi Mamun presided over the programme, while outgoing General Secretary Abdullah Al Mamun and newly elected General Secretary Razib Rayhan conducted it. The newly elected President Mah Alam delivered the closing remarks.
The ceremony was attended by teachers, students, and leaders from various political and cultural student bodies, marking a significant occasion for the university community.
