Dhaka: A lecturer from Jahangirnagar University (JU) tragically passed away today while fulfilling her duties during the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) elections. Jannatul Ferdous, a lecturer in the university’s Fine Arts Department, fell ill during the vote counting process and succumbed to her condition en route to the hospital.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Associate Professor Shamim Reza, who serves as the chairman of the Fine Arts Department and was the returning officer at Pritilata Hall, confirmed the incident. He stated, “During the counting in the morning, she suddenly collapsed at the entrance. She was immediately taken to Enam Medical College Hospital, but she passed away on the way.”

JU Proctor and Election Commission member-secretary Professor Dr A K M Rashidul Alam provided further details, explaining that the counting of all hall union votes, including those from Pritilata Hall, was scheduled for the morning due to previous delays caused by fatigue and the absence of polling agents. He noted that Jannatul Ferdous collapsed near the Senate Hall gate as she arrived with her colleagues for the counting process. Despite efforts to rush her to the hospital, she had already passed away.

The untimely death of Jannatul Ferdous has cast a shadow of sorrow over the university campus, with teachers, students, and colleagues expressing their profound grief and extending heartfelt condolences to her family.
