Dhaka: The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested a Jubo League leader in connection with a murder case linked to the July Uprising from the capital's Shantinagar area. The arrested individual, Md Sumon, aged 37, serves as the vice-president of ward no. 13 of the Jubo League.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, a team from the Dhaka Metro South Unit of the CID apprehended Sumon at Shantinagar Bazar under the jurisdiction of Paltan Police Station. Special Superintendent of Police (Media), CID, Dhaka, Jasim Uddin Khan has confirmed the arrest.
Sumon is originally from Jafrabad village in Madaripur district but was residing in a rented house in Chamelibag, Dhaka. The investigation revealed that on July 18, 2024, during the first day of a shutdown campaign announced by an anti-discrimination student movement, students from various educational institutions in Dhaka organized peaceful processions and rallies. During this time, Sumon, in collaboration with local Awami League leaders, attacked the protesting students and public.
The attack resulted in serious injuries to Liza Akhter, a domestic worker residing at Kanifa Tower in Shantinagar. She was hit by bullets and later succumbed to her injuries on July 22, 2024, while receiving treatment at Popular Hospital. A murder case was subsequently filed in relation to this incident.
During initial questioning, Sumon confessed to his direct involvement in the murder and the attack on the student movement. The CID has requested remand for further interrogation of Sumon to ensure a thorough investigation and to identify and arrest other individuals implicated in the incident.
