Dhaka: The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) early today arrested a Jubo League leader over the murder of student Nadimul Haque Elem during the July Uprising. The arrested individual has been identified as Md. Hedayetul Islam Amin, aged 49, son of Nazrul Islam, residing at 26, Sikkatuli Lane under Bangshal Police Station.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Amin was apprehended from the Sikkatuli Lane area under Bangshal Police Station around 2:30 am today, as stated in a CID press release. The case details reveal that Nadimul Haque Elem, an active participant in the anti-discrimination movement and a former student of Sheikh Borhan Uddin College, was shot dead at Patla Khan Lane near the intersection of Kabi Nazrul College in Old Dhaka on July 19 of the previous year.
Following the incident, the victim’s mother, Kismat Ara, filed a murder case with Sutrapur Police Station against 89 individuals, including the deposed prime minister, Sheikh Hasina. In a related development, the leader of the anti-discrimination student movement, Md. Shamsul Alam Arefin, filed a case under sections 34/109/149/302 of the Penal Code with Sutrapur Police Station on August 24, 2024.
The investigation into this incident is currently being conducted by the CID, Dhaka Metro South Division.
