Dhaka: Vice-Chancellor of Jahangirnagar University (JU) Professor Dr. Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan today called on Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus at the State Guest House Jamuna to discuss the forthcoming Jahangirnagar University Central Students' Union (JUCSU) elections.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Prof Kamrul Ahsan updated the Chief Adviser on the recent advancements in academic and student affairs at JU under his leadership. He reported that the university administration has unveiled a roadmap for the long-awaited JUCSU election. The election schedule is set to be announced on February 1, 2025, following the publication of a draft voter list on January 10.
Prof Kamrul Ahsan noted that JUCSU elections have been held only nine times since the university's founding in 1971, with the last election occurring in 1992. The platform has remained inactive for nearly 33 years. Highlighting his initiatives since taking office, he mentioned the increase in the budget and spending for research and the reduction in first-year admission form fees.
Chief Adviser Prof Yunus commended the students and faculty for their contributions during the July mass uprising and expressed satisfaction with the university's academic progress. He encouraged the university to proceed with its plan for the JUCSU election, suggesting they take a leadership role in the process.
Additionally, Prof Kamrul Ahsan informed the Chief Adviser about the cases filed concerning the attacks on students and journalists during the mass uprising. He mentioned that the university authorities have allocated Taka 37 lakh for the medical treatment of the injured students and teachers.
The meeting was attended by JU Pro-VCs Professor Mahfuzur Rahman and Professor Sohel Ahmed, and Treasurer Professor Abdur Rab.
