Rajbari: Jahangirnagar University (JU) student Ahnaf Tahmid Khan Raiyan, along with his mother and nephew, who were killed in a bus accident at Daulatdia Ferry Ghat in Rajbari, were laid to rest side by side today. They were buried at a local graveyard following the funeral prayers held at Bhabanipur in Rajbari town at around 11:30 am, according to family sources.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Raiyan, a postgraduate student from the Economics Department at JU, lost his life when the bus he was traveling in plunged into the Padma River at Daulatdia Ghat. His mother, Rehena Akter, 59, and his nephew also perished in the accident, while his elder sister, Dr. Nusrat Jahan Khan, sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment.
Niloy Saha Neel, Joint Secretary of the Rajbari Debate Association, confirmed Raiyan’s identity and remarked on Raiyan’s active involvement in cultural activities. He urged for official actions to be taken in response to such tragic incidents.
JU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan expressed his condolences for the loss of Raiyan and extended his sympathies to the bereaved family. He emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into the accident and called for exemplary punishment for those found responsible.
Professor Dr. Md Shafiqul Islam, Chairman of the Economics Department at JU, shared his sorrow, highlighting Raiyan’s dedication to the department and his readiness to assist whenever needed. He prayed for eternal peace for Raiyan, his mother, and his nephew.
