Jatiya sangsad: Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Bir Bikrom, today highlighted the longstanding friendly relations between Bangladesh and Germany, stating that Germany has extended support to Bangladesh since its independence. He made these remarks during a courtesy call by a German parliamentary delegation led by Bundestag member Nicklas Kappe at his office.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the delegation included Bundestag members Gerold Otten, Johann Saadhoff, Ulle Schauws, and German Ambassador to Bangladesh Dr. Rdiger Lotz. During the meeting, the Speaker noted that Germany is the second-largest destination for Bangladesh's export products within the European market. He further elaborated on Bangladesh's democratic journey, acknowledging the country's struggle to establish democratic rights since the 1971 Liberation War and the challenges faced in attaining the desired level of democracy.
The Speaker criticized the Awami League government for undermining voting rights through what he termed as "farcical elections," which he claimed severely impacted democracy in Bangladesh. He recounted a mass uprising led by students and citizens against enforced disappearances, killings, and extrajudicial actions during the authoritarian period, leading to the restoration of democracy through a neutral election.
Hafiz Uddin Ahmad also praised Begum Khaleda Zia as Bangladesh's first elected woman prime minister, highlighting her contributions to the political and economic empowerment of women. He emphasized the sacrifices made by Bangladeshis for democratic rights and their determination to restore democracy.
The Speaker informed the delegation about the current women's representation in parliament, noting that six women lawmakers were elected by popular vote and 50 from reserved seats, all of whom are highly educated and established in their fields. Discussions also included expanding parliamentary diplomacy through forming a Bangladesh-Germany Parliamentary Friendship Group and addressing the ongoing Rohingya crisis.
He assured that the government is working to improve freedom of expression and human rights in Bangladesh, aligning with international standards. Representatives from the German Embassy and officials from the Bangladesh Parliament Secretariat attended the meeting.
