Dhaka: Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon emphasized the essential role of journalism in serving the public and maintaining accountability, rather than acting as a propaganda tool for any vested interests. He articulated these views during the Charge Handover and Farewell Ceremony 2026 of the Jahangirnagar University Journalists’ Association (JUJA) at the university’s Senate Hall.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Minister Swapon stated that journalism is a responsible field that upholds humanity, democracy, and truth. He highlighted the distinction between media serving corporate interests and those genuinely committed to the public welfare. The minister stressed the importance of a free and independent media in ensuring government accountability to its citizens.
The minister addressed the growing challenges in the media landscape, noting how corporate influences and biased narratives threaten professional journalism. He urged journalists to remain vigilant, prioritize research, and stay committed to truth. Highlighting the importance of rule of law, he warned against using journalistic identity to justify wrongdoings and emphasized that journalists must be free from injustice or harassment.
Minister Swapon also spoke on the significance of democratic practices in maintaining state and societal stability. He noted that university-level initiatives reflect democratic values, which are crucial for political processes. He warned against disguising anti-people agendas under the guise of freedom or religion, urging journalists to discern truth from manipulation.
Congratulating the newly elected members of the JUJA, the minister expressed hope that young journalists would contribute to fostering a responsible and people-oriented media landscape in the country. The event was attended by JU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan, other university officials, outgoing and newly elected JUJA members, teachers, students, and student body leaders.
