Journalism should play constructive and creative role to instill hope among people

Kathmandu: Various experts and writers at an interaction here on Monday univocally said that journalism should play constructive and creative role to instill hope among people.

In the interaction organized by the Press Council Nepal, they suggested that the Council should launch a nationwide campaign for development and expansion of constructive journalism.

On the occasion Council Chair Bal Krishna Basnet observed that negativity was rife in every sector and the social media were further fueling it. Thus, he viewed that journalism sector should play a role to stave off negativity.

At the age of information and technology, Basnet argued, journalism should actively function with different thinking and edge thereby utilizing opportunities and facing challenges.

He argued that social media were misused to create narrative about individual, institution and sector becoming unsuccessful and thus spoke of the need to do constructive and creative journalism to remove the wrong narrative and instill hope among peop
le.

Other participants suggested making Council’s quarterly publication ‘Sanhita’ more effective by presenting as it as an example of positive journalism.

Towards this, Dr Kundan Aryal, Chief of Central Department of Journalism and Mass Communication under the Tribhuvan University’ pointed out the need to further revise and fine tune ‘Sanhita’.

He opined that each issue of ‘Sanhita’ should incorporate scholarly write-ups and publish experiences of journalists thereby making each issue of the ‘Sanhita’ a special edition.

Other participants such as Nepal Press Institute’s President Tirtharaj Koirala, journalist Raghu Mainali, Dilli Chaudhary and Ram Krishna Bhandari among others advised that the Council should keep alive the original identity of its quarterly publication and further refine it by including national and international practices of journalism sectors.

They held the view that the publication should be developed as a research-oriented scholarly journal.
