Tokyo:Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on Tuesday expressed robust support for Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's efforts in nation-building, emphasizing Japan's commitment to strengthening its strategic partnership with Bangladesh and promoting mutual prosperity.

According to United News of Bangladesh, Prime Minister Takaichi, in a post on her official X account following their bilateral summit in Tokyo, congratulated Prime Minister Tarique on assuming office. She highlighted Bangladesh as a nation that shares Japan's values of democracy and the rule of law. Takaichi reaffirmed Japan's strong support for the Rahman administration, which came to power after a democratic election.

The discussions between the two leaders focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation based on shared values and Bangladesh's significant role in realizing a Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP). They agreed to advance the Bay of Bengal Industrial Growth Belt (BIG-B) into a new initiative, 'BIG-B for Shared Prosperity,' as a strategic framework for cooperation.

Prime Minister Takaichi noted that Prime Minister Tarique acknowledged Japan's historical role as a peace-loving nation and its early recognition of Bangladesh's independence. Tarique expressed his appreciation for Japan's extensive support and cooperation, highlighting the special place Japan holds in the hearts of the Bangladeshi people.

Takaichi also underscored Bangladesh's economic potential, citing its strategic location connecting South Asia and Southeast Asia and its large, young population of 170 million people, as significant to Japan's economy. The joint statement issued post-summit emphasized collaboration through government and private-sector initiatives under their strategic partnership.

The summit was held at the Japanese Prime Minister's Office on the second day of Prime Minister Tarique's four-day official visit to Japan.
