New york: Jamaat-e-Islami Nayeb-e-Ameer Syeed Abdullah Muhammad Taher announced that his party is preparing for the upcoming elections scheduled for February. Taher made this statement while speaking to reporters at the Grand Hyatt Hotel following his attendance at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, alongside Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Taher confirmed that a tentative date for the elections has been set for February. He stated that the party agrees with this timeline and is actively preparing for the polls. However, he emphasized that some crucial issues need resolution before the elections. Taher highlighted the importance of implementing the July Charter, indicating that its lack of implementation would undermine agreements.
Taher expressed support for the Chief Adviser's remarks at the United Nations, noting there was no reason for disagreement with the statements made regarding the elections. He commended the Chief Adviser's speech at the UNGA session and noted the significance of having stakeholders from major political parties accompany the head of government, describing it as an exceptional initiative.
Addressing the topic of proportional representation, Taher expressed Jamaat-e-Islami's desire for it in both legislative houses. He conveyed hope that the government would accept their demands, given its representation of the people, and reaffirmed the party's intention to participate in the February elections. Jamaat leader Mohammad Nakibur Rahman was also present during these discussions.
