Dhaka: Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami took part in the National Consensus Commission meeting today, as the commission began its second round of discussions with political parties. The talks aim to finalize recommendations submitted by various reform commissions and to prepare the “July Charter”.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, three representatives of Jamaat-e-Islami – Nayeb-e-Ameer Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher, and Assistant Secretaries General Rafiqul Islam Khan and Hamidur Rahman Azad – participated in the third meeting of the second round of talks in the capital’s Foreign Services Academy. On the first day of the second round, they had, however, refrained from joining the meeting. This round of discussion is scheduled to conclude tomorrow.

In his opening remarks, the commission’s vice-chairman, Professor Ali Riaz, stated that discussions that have not been completed will be taken up again in next week’s discussions. He urged political parties to assist in moving the discussions forward. Emphasizing the need to complete the national charter by July, he pointed out the limited time available, urging political parties to remain mindful of this constraint.

In the context of Jamaat’s prior absence, Ali Riaz yesterday reiterated the commission’s commitment to engaging all parties and maintaining communication to ensure their continued participation. He expressed hope that Jamaat-e-Islami or their representatives would join the subsequent day’s discussions.

The meeting saw the presence of commission members including Justice Emdadul Haque, Badiul Alam Majumder, Ayub Mia, Md. Iftekharuzzaman, Safar Raj Hossain, and Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser Monir Haider. Additionally, representatives from 30 political parties, such as BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed, National Citizens Party (NCP) convener Nahid Islam, and Gonosanghati Andolon Chief Coordinator Jonayed Saki, also attended the meeting.
