Dhaka: Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islam Amir Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has reiterated his party’s demand for immediate release of Jamaat’s former acting secretary general ATM Azharul Islam. He raised the demand while speaking at a street rally at the Quran Square in front of Vedarganj Upazila Parishad here today.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman questioned the government’s actions, stating, “Our 11 party leaders have been taken out from our chest… One of our top leaders, ATM Azharul Islam, is still alive. He is in jail with false cases.” He accused the Awami League of repressing Azharul Islam and confining him unjustly.
Dr. Shafiqur highlighted the ongoing struggle against what he described as a “fascist government,” stating that the party has faced oppression for over 15 years. He acknowledged the role of students and the public in challenging the government, saying, “We the politicians couldn’t do that. But the students and people have done it successfully.”
He also called upon the youth to embrace patriotism and faith, asserting that these virtues would enable them to overcome any conspiracy. The rally was presided over by district unit of Jamat Nayeb-e-Amir KM Maqbul Hossain, with other notable leaders including assistant secretary general AHM Hamidur Rahman Azad and district amir Principal Muhammad Abdur Rab Hashemi in attendance.
Following the rally, the Jamaat Amir paid his respects at the grave of movement’s martyred student Hafez Belal, offering prayers at the site.
