Dhaka: Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Dr Shafiqur Rahman on Wednesday emphasized that the Jatiya Sangsad should fulfill its role in meeting the expectations of the nation and its citizens. He outlined the opposition’s commitment to being responsible during a briefing after a parliamentary committee meeting of the opposition alliance at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.

According to United News of Bangladesh, Dr Shafiqur expressed optimism that Bangladesh would progress towards an effective and sustainable democracy with the 13th Jatiya Sangsad. He assured that his party would support government decisions that benefit the country, but would also address any harmful decisions through a structured approach of suggestions and protests if necessary.

He highlighted the importance of logical discussion for decision-making in parliament, suggesting that such an approach would lead to the best outcomes for the nation. Dr Shafiqur also called upon the Bangladesh Nationalist Party to take their oaths as members of the Constitution Reform Council, and welcomed governmental actions that align with public welfare.

The Jamaat leader expressed hope for a future free from corruption and misrule, aligning with public aspirations demonstrated in the July movement. The 13th Parliament is poised to begin its five-year term with its first session on Thursday, following the February 12 general election. Notably, the session will start with the positions of Speaker and Deputy Speaker vacant, as they are currently unavailable.

At the beginning of the session, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will deliver a welcome speech and propose a senior member of parliament to temporarily chair the House, pending the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker by the Members of Parliament.
