Dhaka: Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has called for strengthening Bangladesh's pharmaceutical sector to meet global standards, emphasizing that the country's large population should be regarded as a resource rather than a burden. He made these remarks during a views-exchange session with pharmaceutical businessmen from the Dhaka-15 constituency at the Mehfil Convention Hall in Shewrapara.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the session was chaired by Bangladesh Chemists and Druggists Samity (BCDS) central leader AAM Abdullah Al Mamun and moderated by BCDS senior vice-president Mahbubur Rahman Masum. Dr. Shafiqur, along with Dhaka North Jamaat assistant secretary Dr. Fakhruddin Manik, addressed the gathering, stressing the importance of transforming the population into skilled human resources to build a self-reliant Bangladesh free from hunger and poverty.
Dr. Shafiqur emphasized that Bangladesh's dense population should not be viewed as a liability. He stated, "Humans are always assets. Our duty is to turn this population into a strong workforce. A healthy population is key to advancing the nation," highlighting the significance of physical well-being and moral strength for national progress.
He raised concerns over allegations that some doctors compromise ethics by accepting undue benefits from pharmaceutical companies, leading to irresponsible behavior with people's lives. He noted the progress of Bangladesh's pharmaceutical industry, which was once reliant on foreign companies but now exports medicines to 38 countries.
The Jamaat chief called on all stakeholders to take effective measures to elevate the domestic pharmaceutical industry to global standards. He urged medical professionals and industry representatives to uphold integrity, cautioning against unethical collaboration that misleads the public.
He concluded by urging everyone to act with conscience and accountability, emphasizing that true success comes from earning the pleasure of the Almighty through honesty and good conduct. The event was attended by Professional zone assistant director Ziaul Hasan, Kafrul zone assistant director Md. Shahidullah, constituency member secretary Shah Alam Tuhin, and other local organizational leaders.
