Dhaka: Jamaat-e-Islami has agreed to participate in the upcoming national election scheduled for February, asserting the need for a Proportional Representation (PR) system to ensure fairness in the electoral process. The announcement came after a significant meeting at the state residence, Jamuna, where Jamaat representatives voiced concerns about potential biases favoring a particular party.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Jamaat Naib-e-Ameer Dr. Syed Abdullah Md. Taher addressed reporters following the meeting. He highlighted that prioritizing one party over others creates discrimination, which poses a major challenge to achieving a level playing field in the elections. Dr. Taher insisted that these issues must be resolved ahead of the elections to maintain electoral integrity.
The meeting, which took place at 4:30 pm, was attended by prominent figures, including Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, Industry Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan, and National Security Adviser Dr. Khalilur Rahman. Dr. Taher led the Jamaat delegation, which was composed of Secretary General and former MP Mia Golam Parwar, along with Assistant Secretaries General Rafiqul Islam Khan and Dr. Hamidur Rahman Azad.
During the discussion, Dr. Taher criticized the decision to commence the election process without finalizing the July Charter, describing it as a misstep. He further mentioned that 25 parties have shown their support for the PR system, which he believes aligns with the majority's preference.
Dr. Taher also underscored the commitment made by the Chief Adviser to implement reforms, ensure visible justice, and conduct a world-class election. He concluded by emphasizing the necessity for every political party to contribute constructively to guarantee a free, fair, and inclusive election process.
