Kushtia: Students of Islamic University (IU) in Kushtia have taken a significant step by forming a 25-member committee to spearhead a movement aimed at establishing a roadmap for the Islamic University Central Students Union (ICSU). This development comes in the wake of a successful campaign by students of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman University (BRUR) advocating for their central students’ union.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the IU students are seeking a definitive roadmap for the ICSU from the university administration. To this end, stakeholders from active cultural and political organizations on campus engaged in two days of discussions, culminating in the formation of the initial committee on Saturday at the TSCC corridor.

The newly formed committee, which includes representatives from all major campus organizations, is expected to unveil the roadmap for the ICSU movement in due course.

Key figures in the discussions included Chhatra Dal IU unit Convenor Sahed Ahammed, Chhatra Shibir President Mahmudul Hasan, former SAD Coordinator SM Sweet, Chhatra Union Secretary Ahmad Galib, Islami Chhatra Andolan President Ismail Hossain Rahat, and Khelafat Chhatra Majlis President Sadek Ahmed, among others.

During the discussions, students also emphasized the need for regular student participation in ICSU, justice for Sajid’s murder, accountability for teachers and officials who opposed the July-August movement, improved student safety, and the inclusion of minorities in the union.

IU Acting Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. M. Yeaqub Ali commented, “To form ICSU, all parties must stay united under one platform. If students remain consistent in their demand, there will be no obstacle to forming ICSU. As university authorities, we will do everything to facilitate this process.”

Despite the lack of explicit provision for a student union in the Islamic University Act 1980, the students are resolute in their efforts to establish the ICSU.
